Then if you want, you could have the broken key repaired, and now you have an extra. Just go to parts and order an additional key. In this case, there is no reason to get a "replacement" key. ![]() Some dealers charge per hour which can be $250 or more in labor alone. Most dealers charge a flat fee for the service visits required for a "replacement" key, say an extra $100 in addition to the key itself. Sometimes you can beg the parts counter for a discount but expect to pay around $250 for a regular key, and $300 for a KeylessGo version (assuming your car has that feature). Like I said, you do not need a service visit to get an additional key. ![]() For this reason, they usually ask you to return for another service visit to do this for you, though it's not necessary. The key actually does come pre-programmed and ready to use, but upon first use, it may take some time to lock-out the old key(s) in that column. If you want a replacement key, you will need a service visit to have them determine the column and row for the key to be replaced and order accordingly. To get an additional key, all you need to do is go to the dealership's service counter, show proof ow ownership, and have them order for you. When you use that key, it electronically disables the key in the lower row for that column. Once the column of the bad/missing key is determined, they order the next row for that column. The dealership techs can determine which it is by having all working/available keys and then testing with SDS. Say the key in row 1 column 2 is the missing one. If you lose a key, or a key is damaged, you cna then order a replacement key for it. Another additional key is column 4, row 1, and so on. If you order an additional key, you'll get row 1, column 3. The car is delivered with two keys - row 1, column one, row 1, column 2. All 24 possible key codes are assigned during build, and only MBZ knows these codes. Only one key in each column can be active at a time. Imagine a grid, with 8 columns by 3 rows. It can have a total of 24, but only 8 can be active at once. One is to order a "replacement" key and another is an "additional" key. Good advice! When ordering a key, there are two ways to do it. ![]() You had said something before and it worked for me and i can't remember, it was something like disconnect one of the battery cables, ( can't remember which one and go hold my foot on the brake for 30 seconds and wala ) could you refresh my memory on that trick :nerd I cannot get a part till tomorrow and she is using my car till then, booooooo, My key won't turn in the ignition, it's my wife's car and she has neglected to go get a spare key, even after i told her the first time it did it, to go get a spare because your going to be stranded !!!, now before when it happened i rocked the vehicle and jiggled the key a lot and it would eventually start, I would say this happened four times and the rocking of the car and jiggling the key work, well now it isn't HELP ![]() I have had a hard time with my 2002 c230, everytime i have to disconnect the battery, i re[laced the alt, recently and had fixed my steering problem and the car has been running like a champ i have only put brakes on it and a cat convertor and a new alt, anyways, this has been happening on and off for three months ,
